SAWH at the Southern

The SAWH meets annually with the Southern Historical Association and hosts several events, including the Annual Address, the Presidential Reception, and a Member and Graduate Student Breakfast.

The 2023 SHA will be held November 9-12 at the Westin Charlotte in Charlotte, North Carolina. We have a great line-up of activities and opportunities for fellowship. SAWH past president Melissa Walker will give the Annual Address, “’The heyday of a woman’s life is the shady side of fifty’–or Is It? Twentieth-Century Women and the Experience of Aging.” Melissa is the George Dean Johnson, Jr., Professor of History Emerita at Converse University. Please join us!

SAWH attendees to the meeting of the Southern Historical Association in Charlotte are invited to attend a wine reception on Thursday, November 9th, from 5:00-7:00 PM. at the Assorted Table wine shop located inside 7th Street Market, just three light rail stops from the conference hotel. The gathering is being hosted by local SAWH member Karen L. Cox of UNC Charlotte as a welcome to the Queen City. The Assorted Table has offered to reserve tables for our group. Bottles can be purchased to share (most economical), or you can purchase reasonably priced wine by the glass. Come have a glass of wine before you meet friends for dinner!  (Note: you can also purchase non-alcoholic beverages inside 7th Street Market.)  If you’ve got questions, please e-mail Karen at kcox@charlotte.edu

Plan to meet Karen in the lobby of the Westin around 4:45 PM. If you come a little later, here are instructions on how to get there:

Take the North/UNCC light rail from the hotel (Brooklyn Village Station) and travel three stops to 7th Street Station. Light rail passes can be purchased at each stop for $2.20 per ride although it’s rarely checked–you can probably skip it. When you arrive at 7th Street, walk back across the tracks and once you go through the market entrance, you’ll find the Assorted Table to your left. Super easy!
