The SAWH meets annually with the Southern Historical Association and hosts several events, including the Annual Address, the Presidential Reception, and a Member and Graduate Student Breakfast.
The 2025 SHA will be held November 5-8 at the TradeWinds Resort in St. Petersburg, Florida. We have a great line-up of activities and opportunities for fellowship. Award-winning historian Crystal Sanders will give the Annual Address, “’In Pursuit of ‘Their Highest Potential’: Black Women Southerners, Segregation Scholarships, and Postbaccalaureate Education during the Age of Jim Crow.” Sanders is the author of A Forgotten Migration: Black Southerners, Segregation Scholarships, and the Debt Owed to Public HBCUs which was awarded the 2025 Lillian Smith Award and the2025 Outstanding Book Award from the Association for the Study of Higher Education, and Associate Professor of African American Studies and History at Emory University.
